Abstract:
Piroxicam has a propensity to cause ulcers; whereas zinc ions
are known to possess antiulcer and anti-inflammatory activity thus
zinc complex of piroxicam was prepared, characterized and evaluated
for their anti-inflammatory and ulcerogenic activity. Zinc complex of
piroxicam was prepared by adding zinc sulfate to an aqueous solution
of sodium piroxicam and its structure was characterized by IR, 1HNMR,
UV, DSC, atomic absorption spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Anti-inflammatory
studies, using the carrageenan induced hind paw oedema showed that
there was a significant difference (P< 0.05, ANOVA plotted by Dunnet’s
test) in the anti-inflammatory activity of piroxicam and its zinc
complex, and the physical mixture of piroxicam and zinc sulfate. In
addition, zinc complex of piroxicam showed a significant reduction in
ulcer (lesion index, LI) as compared to that of piroxicam and physical
mixture of piroxicam and zinc sulfate. The use of the complex may be
preferable to piroxicam alone.
Key words:
Piroxicam,
anti-inflammatory, ulcerogenic activity, zinc complex.
