Abstract:
Cobalt (II) forms a complex with 2-hydroxy phenyl azo-2/ -naphthol
(PAN), a synthesized azo dye. Formation of the complex has been
studied in aqueous solution using different spectroscopic
techniques. Co(II) forms a 1: 2 metal-ligand complex with
2-hydroxy phenyl azo-2/ -naphthol at different pH. The effective
stability constant of the complex, [Co(PAN)2] was
found to be 6.33 × 1016. The complex Co(PAN)2(H2O)2
has been synthesized and characterized by different techniques.
The complex was found to be a potential radioprotector in
presence of g- radiation using an RNA base uracil as the target
molecule.
Key Words: Co(II), 2-hydroxy phenyl azo-2/ -naphthol, Azo,
Stoichiometry, Stability constant, radioprotector.
