Abstract
The kinetics of the
Rh(III) catalyzed oxidation of mannitol and glycerol by an acidified
solution of NaIO4 in the presence of Hg(OAc)2 as a scavenger, have
been studied in the temperature range 30-450 C . The rate shows zero
order with respect to the substrates and 1storder with respect to
catalyst Rh(III), for both mannitol and glycerol. Negligible effect
of mercuric acetate Hg(OAc)2, and ionic strength of the medium was
observed and the reaction showed no effect of [IO4-], [Cl-] and [H+]
ion on the reaction rate. A suitable mechanism in conformity with
the kinetic observations has been proposed and the thermodynamic
parameters computed.
