ABSTRACT: Solvent free synthesis of 5-Nitro-2-aryl-1H-indole-3-carboxaldehyde (3a-i) has been successfully accomplished in high yields and lesser time in ecofriendly conditions by using Green Chemistry Techniques (Grindstone chemistry, Microwave irradiation) and ultrasonication. 5-Nitro-2-arylindoles (2a-i) on treatment with N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and phosphorus oxychloride (POCl3) gave the desired title products. All the synthesized compounds have been characterized by elemental analyses and spectral data (IR, PMR and FAB Mass). They have also been evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities and some of them have shown promising results against S.aureus, E.coli and A. niger, R.bataticola.

Keywords: 5-Nitro-2- arylindoles, Grindstone chemistry, Microwave irradiation, ulrasonication.
